MAURICE SENDAK (1928-2012)

Today is the birthday of Maurice Sendak, who has been called “the most important children’s book artist of the 20th Century. Sendak penned and illustrated “Where the Wild Things Are” that forever changed the landscape of children’s picture books with its story of Max, who is sent to bed without his supper and who subsequently sails to an island of monsters, called the Wild Things. His award-winning output includes Really Rosie, In the Night Kitchen and Outside Over There and inventive settings and costume designs for several operas, including The Magic Flute and The Nutcracker. Sendak loved and lived with his partner Eugene Glynn for more than fifty years.

“To be a happy person, you have to be sympathetic to the child you once were and maintain the continuity between you as a child and you as an adult.” Maurice Sendak.
